ONTARIO TRILLIUM FOUNDATION AWARDS $25,000
TO OPEN THE BRUCE GREY ENVIRONMENTAL
RESOURCE CENTRE

Walkerton, Ontario - the Ontario Trillium Foundation recently awarded a significant grant of $25,000 over the next year to support the creation of the Bruce Grey Regional Environmental Resource Centre for the Walkerton Healthy Community Initiative.

"This grant will support the ongoing work of the Walkerton Healthy Community Initiative, a non-profit, volunteer directed and operated environmental organization" said co-coordinator, Lynda Bausinger. "We are thankful for Trillium's commitments to our goals of fostering a healthy community for people and all living things in the Bruce Grey area."

The New Resource centre will have its official opening of the new office space, located in the Jubilee Hall/Town Hall Building on Jackson Street, this Saturday, October 5th between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Bill Murdoch, MPPP and a representative from the Ontario Trillium Foundation will cut the ribbon at 7:00 p.m. Other invited guests include councils from both Bruce and Grey Counties, local business owners, the residents and the media. The Centre will provide the residents of Bruce Grey with environmental resources and information on a variety of issues ranging from safe rural drinking water to organic gardening and reduced pesticide use. Alternative energy production, water conservation and waste management are only a sampling of the information which will be easily accessible.

The Centre will be staffed, so the public is encouraged to ask for help in finding answers to their environmental questions. People are welcome to utilize the hard copy books, magazine articles, brochures, and the internet. These tools will aid them in finding environmentally sustainable and viable solutions which ultimately contribute to a healthy community. Hours of operation will be from 10:00 am to 4:00 p.m. for the winter months. The possible introduction of another staff member in the spring would allow for evening hours of operation at that time. Anyone who wishes to visit the centre in the evening is asked to call 881-1795 and arrangements will be made to accommodate any request.

The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Ministry of Culture, receives annually $100 million of government funding generated through Ontario's charity casino initiative. The Foundation allocates grants to eligible charitable and not-for-profit organizations in the arts, culture, sports, recreation, environment and social service sectors.
